Growing Catnip For Your Cat
Thursday, August 26th, 2010
Anyone who owns a cat knows that cats go nuts over catnip. It is a herb that makes them feel good and act silly. It doesn’t hurt them at all. If you want to make sure your cat is only getting the organic catnip that is available then you can grow it yourself so you know exactly what is in it. First you need to decide if you want to start from scratch or get one already growing. If you want to get one already growing you can go to a local nursery and get one, or if you want to start from scratch get a seed.
When you grow your own from a seed though you are the one in control of what goes on it and what does not. Like most plants the catnip is going to need a lot of sunlight, so when it starts sprouting make sure it has lots of light. If you don’t have any spots in the house that get a lot of sunlight then you can substitute the sunlight with a fluorescent light for now and put the light about 18″ above your plant.
As your plant grows and reaches the stage where it can be planted outside you need to start taking it out. Take it outside for a couple hours a day for about 2 weeks. This will help it to get used to the outside weather. After about a month your catnip will be ready to pick. Now you can pick the stems off of it and put them in a place to dry out. A dry spot with steady air flow is good. After the leaves are all dried out you can take the stems out. Now crumble your leaves all up and put them up somewhere where your cat is not going to get it. You can also make your own organic catnip toy from it. Just simply wrap the leaves with durable cloth and make sure it’s sealed. Now just watch your cat enjoy it!
